Right To Buy Process

The actual Right To Buy process is easier than most people think. Here we lay out the 7 steps you need to take.

1) - Check you're eligible

The first thing you’ll need to figure out is if you’re even eligible for the Right To Buy your council property. Check your Right To Buy eligibility here.

2) - Work out your costs

You'll need to work out all the costs associated with owning a property and if you can fully afford it. This will include things such as the cost of a mortgage, being responsible for any repairs, losing housing benefits if you're currently receiving them, etc.

3) - Complete RTB1 form and submit to the council

The next stage in the process is to complete what's called an RTB1 form. It's actually not that complicated and there's plenty of help you can get for each section. You can also call us on 0203 693 3832 and we'll be happy to answer any questions you have.

4) - Wait for confirmation from the council

The council then have 4 - 8 weeks to reply to you and give you final confirmation that you are eligible under the Right To Buy Scheme. If they miss this deadline there are steps you can take to get a further reduction on the property price.

5) - Receive an offer from the council

The council then send what's called a "S125" offer notice, setting out what they think the property is worth, what discount they think you're entitled to and any terms and conditions. If you don't agree with some of this you can appeal.

6) - Get a Survey, Mortgage and Solicitor

If you accept the councils offer you now have to get a survey, solicitor and mortgage. (Or find additional funding options.)

7) - Complete the purchase!

Once you've agreed terms with the council and worked out how you will fund the purchase, you can complete the purchase of your new home.
